I Took His Custom Harley Davidson Fat Boy - Keep It - Or Not?

This doesn't happen everyday - I took his custom Harley Davidson Fat Boy. Let's have a look at this beautiful motorcycle, the iconic Harley Fat Boy. Should I keep it? Do you think this is better than my Street Glide Special? Let me know in the You Tube comments what you think of this Fat Boy?

The Harley Fat Boy was released in about 1990 with an 80 cubic inch engine in the softail frame and was easily recognised by the solid disc wheels. The first model came out in a light gunmetal grey and some yellow trim.

People say that’s it named after the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan – they were called fat man and little boy – but even if this is true I doubt Harley Davidson would publicly state that. To me compared to bikes at the time it looks fat – so maybe that’s the reason for the name?

Arnold Schwarzenegger famously rode a black 1991 model in Terminator 2 which probably made it an iconic bike and interestingly one of the actual bikes used in the movie sold for $480,000 (usd) a few years ago.

I saw Terminator 2 when it came out and thought that’s the bike for me and traded my Kawasaki sports tourer for a Fat Boy. I have been riding Harley’s ever since.

I’ve had 4 Fatboys and I love them.

Now my mate John who’s got a few bikes and changes them over frequently rang me said – here have this I’m not riding this too often.

This is a 2018 Fat Boy with a 114 M8 engine. The paint is Harley factory limited edition. It has an extensive list of modifications. Here is a picture of what the original bike looked like.

Modifications Include;

  • Painted wheel inserts

  • 2-inch burleigh bars with an 8 inch rise

  • Total blacked out paint and engine components (The original bike was satin chrome - see the picture above)

  • S & S 475 cam

  • Dynoed at 132HP

  • TBR 2 into 1 Comp-S full  system exhaust

  • Defiance handgrips and foot pegs

  • Sik tail tidy with hidden indicators

  • Internal clutch lines and integrated front indicators

  • Custom seat with red cross stitching and snake skin

  • Front and rear axle covers

  • Carbon fibre covers on fuel caps and centre tank panel

  • Screamin eagle heavy breather – elite air cleaner kit – carbon fibre

  • Carbon fibre derby cover and timing cover

  • Screamin eagle ignition coil cover phat spark plug leads

  • Aftermarket mirrors

What I found interesting is the perceived size of this bike. I remember when I first bought a Fat Boy in the early nineties I thought it was a huge bike.

I’ve got a Street Glide now. Its my second Street Glide so I hadn’t ridden a Fat Boy for at least 7 years. Jumping onto this beauty seemed like riding a lightweight bicycle.

It felt light and nimble and goes really well. It sounds awesome and it seems to rev a lot tighter than my Street glide – so that’s either the tune or the counter balancer in this engine. Enjoy the video.
