I’ve had heaps of motorcycles in my 40 odd years of riding. I’m on my 7th Harley and bought my first Harley new in the very early nineties when Fat Boys came out. During that time, I have heard millions of negative comments and jokes about Harley’s and Harley owners, from the way they break down to the pirate gear that many of us wear.
I find it all pretty funny really – I don’t mean the jokes – some of them really are funny. What I mean is the fact that it’s so polarising and that people go out of their way to make these comments.
Just look at some of the comments on my video’s – on a mistakes Harley riders make video – the standard comment by the triggered crowd is “first mistake is buying a Harley.

People have all sorts of gripes like..
Expensive
The lowest customer satisfaction
Chinese parts
Worst warranty
Beaten by competitors
Bloated price
Whether these things are true, half true or false is irrelevant – What’s created all the emotion in people? Enough negative emotion to make them comment, make them angry and insult others.
Emotion
What is emotion? I ask it because I see it as very different to feeling. You can feel an emotion but they are different. I would say that emotions happen as a result of thoughts that are muddled, confusing -- that you are unable to process properly.
This creates strong energy that blocks your logical thinking process and its got the power to move you - to make you take action.
Pretty good if you can use it in your favour but devastating to those that can’t deal with it. Think about all the men who are jailed and punished for domestic violence all the way to murder that’s a result of emotion. How to process and deal with this should be taught in school.
There something about Harley Davidson’s and the people who ride them that makes people emotional – even irrational. The brand Harley Davidson itself, is charged with emotion. Historically the marketing has done a great job – no, a magnificent job promoting an image, lifestyle, community etc. What other brands can boast people getting their logo, tattooed onto their bodies – and that’s for life!
